KULIARCHAR, KISHOREGANJ: Pushed to the brink by the relentless abuse of her drug-addict grandsons, a 65-year-old grandmother, Mortuza Begum, tragically ended her life by jumping under a running train in Kuliarchar upazila of Kishoreganj.
The tragic incident took place on Saturday (May 30) afternoon in the Kharkamara area under Kuliarchar Municipality.
According to local sources, Mortuza Begum had been suffering severe torment at the hands of her two drug-addicted grandsons for a long time. Unable to work due to her advanced age, she used to survive on begging. Shockingly, her grandsons would routinely snatch away the meager amount she earned from begging to fund their addiction.
Witnesses and locals revealed that whenever the grandsons failed to manage money for drugs, they would physically assault her. On the night before the incident, she was again brutally tortured after failing to provide them with cash. Unable to bear the inhumane physical and mental abuse any longer, the elderly woman ultimately chose to end her life under the wheels of the Dhaka-bound Kishoreganj Express train.
A Grim Reminder
This heartbreaking incident highlights how the deadly grip of drug addiction is destroying families and society from within. To prevent such tragedies, building a strong social movement against narcotics and ensuring greater accountability from guardians have become urgent necessities. Otherwise, many more innocent lives like Mortuza Begum’s will continue to be lost.
