Advocacy Meeting in Bogura to Prevent Electoral Violence Against Women

An advocacy meeting was held in Bogura to raise awareness and ensure access to remedy mechanisms for preventing electoral violence against women. The day-long event took place on Wednesday at the Rocha’s conference room on Sherpur Road in the town.

The program was organized by WAVE Foundation and ActionAid Bangladesh under the project titled "Strengthening Gender-Sensitive and Inclusive Decision-Making Structures for Democratic Reforms in Bangladesh."

Presided over by Rommana Khatun, Executive Director of PACED, the meeting was inaugurated by the Senior District Election Officer, Md. Fazlul Karim. In his opening remarks, he stated, "Women's participation is essential for a healthy democratic process. Ensuring equal and effective participation of women in the democratic system is crucial. Sustainable democracy cannot be established without women's political empowerment. Coordination among local administration, law enforcement agencies, and human rights organizations must be strengthened to prevent electoral violence."

The meeting was attended by Tanjima Akhter, Deputy Director of the Department of Women Affairs; Nurul Islam Liton, City Social Service Officer; Zayed Ibn Abul Fazal, Sadar Upazila Election Officer; Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Shibganj Upazila Election Officer; Dr. M.S. Zaman (Shajil), OCC Coordinator at SZMC; Dr. Rokeya Khanam, Medical Officer (Gynae & Obs) at SZMC; Faruk Hossain, Deputy Director of Light House; Babli Suraiya, BRAC Representative; and Nilufa Yasmin, PUP Representative. Lawyers, politicians, journalists, human rights activists, and members of civil society and various NGOs also participated.

Speakers noted that women often face various forms of violence, intimidation, and social pressure during elections, which hinders their right to vote. Therefore, collective efforts are required to ensure a safe environment and increase women's participation.

During the session, participants presented several key recommendations to prevent electoral violence. Stakeholders engaged in group work, presentations, and the formulation of action plans and commitments. Facilitated by Rabiul Islam, a community volunteer for the project in Bogura district, Field Coordinator Ishrat Jahan Poppy led the discussion by highlighting the current situation of political and general violence against women in the country.
